Going through a hurricane can be stressful to say the least. You never know how bad they are going to be or what the aftermath will look like. One thing you can do is prepare ahead of time to make life a little more comfortable afterwards.

How to Prepare for a Hurricane:
- Water
The most essential thing you will need is water! Experts recommended that you have one gallon per person, per day and have at least a 3-day supply. We buy bottled water for things like drinking and brushing our teeth but you may also need water to wash your hands, possibly bathe with, flush your toilet, etc. So, fill everything you can. Coolers, jugs, even your bathtub (sanitized first of course).
- Food
Get non-perishables. Bread, crackers and Peanut Butter go a long way! Fruits, nuts, canned meats and of course, pop tarts 🙂
* Fun Fact: The most purchased food during a hurricane is Pop Tarts. Seriously, Google it 🙂
Also, make sure you have a manual can opener! Yep, learned that lesson the hard way 🙂 I have one from the Pioneer Woman that I <3 !
- Emergency Lighting
Chances are the power is going to go out as the storm approaches so make sure you have Flashlights with fresh batteries. We also stock up on candles. Make sure you have a lighter or matches for those. Tiki Torches make good outdoor lighting and help keep the mosquitoes away – because a hurricane rarely comes when the weather is cool, right?
- Chargers and Power Packs
Make sure that you charge all of your devices before the storm hits. It’s also a good idea to have extra battery packs, power packs and portable charges on hand.
- Weather Radio
I’t important to listen for emergency information and alerts. There are some great options out there for solar powered radios now. Some even come with a crank. Here are some examples: Weather Radios
- Gas
If there is no power, there is no pump. Fill your tanks BEFORE the storm. Also, don’t forget gas for the generator if you have one.
- Cash
When the power goes out, the ATM’s don’t work. Get some cash ahead of time.
- Medications
Whether you’re staying or evacuating, you should gather all your medications and store them in something airtight and portable. Also, make sure you have a first aid kit with basic first aid supplies in it.
- Important Papers
When evacuating, don’t forget to grab your birth certificates, social security cards, etc. If you’re staying, make sure they are in a sealed, waterproof container. Also important, make sure you have your insurance info; policy numbers and contact info for you agent. It’s a good idea to email these things to yourself, that way no matter where you are, you can access them.
- Pets
Don’t forget about those fur babies! Make sure you have enough water and food for them. If you’re evacuating, don’t forget their stuff; bowls, beds, leashes and paperwork (just in case you need to prove their vaccinated).
A Few More Tips; based on experience 🙂
- Freeze water in as many milk jugs or empty plastic soda bottles as you have before the storm. Keep them in your freezer and they will help keep it cooler longer. Remember, a full fridge/freezer with items packed will keep longer.
- Disposable plates & utensils are great when you don’t have hot water to wash dishes.
- Wash all your laundry BEFORE the storm comes. You don’t want to be without power and clean clothes :-0
- Be prepared to go without a/c afterwards. Battery powered fans are great!! Also, things like cooling bandanas can be invaluable during the hot, clean up time afterwards! Don’t forget your water so you stay hydrated.
- Stock up on mosquito spray. Those little buggers are worst after a summer storm!
- Stock up on Sunscreen. You will need this during clean up time.
- Gloves – also a must have for clean up
- Charcoal – Even if you have a gas grill. If the storm is bad enough, you may not have a natural gas source afterwards so be prepared with a backup plan
- Fire Extinguisher – not just now but always.
- If you have kids, make sure you have non-electronic things to keep them busy during a power outage. These storms can be stressful for everyone and keeping them occupied will help lessen that.
- You should always have a plan of escape. Do you know where you’ll go if a tornado hits? Have a plan and make sure everyone in the house knows what that plan is.
Safety Tips for the aftermath:
- If you are using a Generator, always use it outside. It should NEVER be placed in a house, garage or near windows.
- Don’t ever go near downed power lines. They may be (and likely are) still live and can kill you.
- Never leave candles unattended.
- Never walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown! *It only takes six inches of fast moving water to knock you down and one foot of water can sweep your vehicle away.
- Be careful during clean up. Wear protective clothing. And it’s always a good idea to work with someone, not alone.
